Published

New Delhi/Hyderabad, April 1 (IANS) Former Vice President Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu and popular Telugu actor Konidela Chiranjeevi are the two distinguished sons of Andhra Pradesh who received the Padma Vibhushan on Monday.

While Venkaiah Naidu received the second-highest civilian award for exceptional and distinguished service in public affairs, Chiranjeevi was honoured for his contributions to the field of art.

Naidu, 74, served as the Vice President from 2017 to 2022 and continues to serve people through Swarna Bharat Trust.

A quick-witted and effective communicator steeped in RSS-BJP ideology, he rose from the ranks to become the BJP President and a Union Minister to finally become India’s Vice President.

Hailing from Nellore district in south coastal Andhra, Naidu was associated with the RSS from an early age. He was also a student leader and later championed the cause of farmers.

Born on July 1, 1949, Naidu pursued law and was involved in the movement launched by Jayaprakash Narayan and formed the Loknayak Jai Prakash Chhatra Sangharsha Samithi in 1974. He was President of the youth wing of the Janata Party in Andhra Pradesh from 1977 to 1980 and jailed during the Emergency (1975-77). He remained underground until his arrest, distributing anti-government literature in educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

When the Janata Party was formed on the eve of the 1977 general elections, he became the state President of the Janata Yuva Morcha. Contesting his maiden election as a Janata Party candidate, he was elected to the state Assembly in 1978 from Udayagiri in the Nellore district. After a three-year stint, he joined the BJP in 1980. Naidu was re-elected to the state Assembly in 1983 and was the floor leader of the three-member BJP group in the house in 1980-85. He also became Vice President of BJP’s youth wing. He was leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Andhra Pradesh, state General Secretary and state unit chief.

Naidu hit the national scene in the early 1980s when he was one of the prominent opposition spokespersons during the campaign by N.T. Rama Rao after his dismissal as the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister by Indira Gandhi. He held the position of BJP General Secretary in 1993-2000 and its spokesperson in between. Though he later emerged as a BJP leader at the national level and served as the party’s General Secretary and its spokesman, he could not get elected to Lok Sabha. He contested thrice but was unsuccessful.

He handled key organisational assignments in the BJP and became its President in 2002. Naidu had three continuous terms in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka from 1998 to 2016, when he shifted to Rajasthan to get a fourth term. He was the Rural Development Minister during the first NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his inspiration along with senior party leader L.K. Advani.

Naidu was the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Urban Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation of the Modi government before he was nominated for the Vice President’s post. He was also the Parliamentary Affairs Minister for the first two years of the Modi government.

Chiranjeevi is one of the most popular actors in south India and the top actor of the Telugu film industry, or Tollywood.

Popular in both the Telugu states and known for his acting brilliance, he was previously honoured with Padma Bhushan.

Known as ‘Megastar’, Chiranjeevi acted in over 150 films in a career spanning four decades. He also acted in a few Tamil, Hindi and Kannada films.

Chiru, as he is popular among his fans, is also known for his philanthropic work. He runs Chiranjeevi Blood and Eye Banks. Last seen in “Waltair Veeraiya”, he is currently working on his 156th film titled “Viswambhara”.

Born Konidela Sivasankara Varaprasad on August 22, 1955, in Mogalthur village in West Godavari district, he began his acting career with the film “Punadhiralu” in 1978.

Riding on his popularity, Chiranjeevi floated the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) in 2008. However, his political career ended in a disaster with the PRP coming a cropper in the 2009 elections. He later merged the party with Congress and served as Minister of Culture and Tourism (Independent charge) in the Manmohan Singh-led government between 2012 and 2014. After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the defeat of Congress, he distanced himself from politics and resumed working in movies.

The third recipient of the Padma award from Andhra Pradesh is D. Uma Maheshwari. She was conferred Padma Shri in the Arts category for Harikatha.

The 63-year-old is the first female Harikatha storyteller to perform in Sanskrit, breaking traditional barriers and keeping the storytelling tradition alive for four decades. She penned over four Harikathas, covering figures like Ramana Maharshi and Potti Sriramulu. Her contribution encouraged many young girls to break free from traditional barriers and embrace the art form.

Mumbai, July 6 (IANS) After its dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP has decided to increase its presence across Maharashtra by stepping up its outreach with people from all sections of the society in the run-up to the Assembly elections slated for September-October this year.

As a part of its poll strategy, state unit chief Sunil Tatkare held two-day marathon meetings with the party’s different cells and asked them to strengthen the organisation by connecting with all sections and bringing them into the party fold.

Tatkare, who was the party nominee elected from Raigad constituency, also asked the cadres and office bearers to focus on aggressively carrying out membership drives both for the parent organisation and also for the youth, women and other cells.

He said that the budget presented by deputy chief minister (DCM) and finance minister Ajit Pawar is a relief to the common people. “DCM has announced many welfare schemes in the budget. During the meeting, we decided to take the schemes and reach out to the last person in society,” he added.

Vice-President tears into Chidambaram over ‘part-timers’ jibe on new criminal laws

Published

on

By

Thiruvananthapuram, July 7 (IANS) Without taking name, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday hit out at Rajya Sabha MP P. Chidambaram over the latter’s comments that the three new criminal laws were drafted in the Parliament by ‘part-timers’, as he termed the Congress veteran’s remarks as an ‘inexcusable insult’ to the wisdom of the Parliament.

The new criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively, with effect from July 1, 2024.

Taking strong exception to the ‘part-times’ jibe by the Congress MP, the Vice-President said that he was shocked beyond words to see such ‘irresponsible and wild’ remarks that part-timers have drafted the ‘new criminal laws’.

Chidambaram, who served as the Finance Minister in UPA I and UPA II regimes, said in an interview with The Indian Express that the three criminal laws which came into force from July 1 were drafted by ‘non-professional people’, who were ‘part-time members of a committee’.

“Are we part-timers in Parliament? This is an inexcusable insult to the wisdom of the Parliament! I do not have words strong enough to condemn such kind of narrative being set afloat,” Jagdeep Dhankar said.

Addressing the 12th Convocation of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, the Vice-President told the audience that when he opened the newspapers this morning, he was shocked to see such a statement by an informed mind who has also been the Finance Minister of the country.

Vice-President Dhankar, who is also the Rajya Sabha Chairman, urged the audience to ‘be on guard’ over a deliberate narrative being floated by certain elements to ‘run down our nation, demean our institutions and also taint our progress’.

“When informed minds knowingly lead you astray, we need to be on guard,” he told the audience.

“With a heavy heart, I am sharing with you that the gentleman gave total rest to his vocal chords while the debate was going on in the Parliament on Nyaya Vidhan,” he added.

India well-positioned to be key global space player in coming years: Vice-President Dhankhar

Published

on

By

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday said India is well-positioned to be a key player in the global space sector in the coming years with its robust space programme and a growing pool of skilled professionals.

He said this while addressing the 12th Convocation of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) – Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The Vice President said that ambitious missions, groundbreaking discoveries, and steadfast commitment to scientific advancement define India’s journey in space exploration.

“In the field of space, our recent accomplishments have earned global accolades. In the year 2023, all seven launches of ISRO including Chandrayaan-3, and Aditya L-1, were successful,” VP Dhankhar said.

“A total of 5 Indian satellites, 46 foreign satellites, and 8 rocket bodies (including POEM-2) were placed in their intended orbits. All this just in one year,” he added.

He credited the achievements to the efforts of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and said they “underscore India’s technical prowess and determination to explore the uncharted territories of space”.

“It is because of ISRO only, that Bharat can proudly boast of being the world’s first country to successfully land Chandrayaan 3 on the south pole of Moon,” he said.

“ISRO has etched Shiv Shakti point (the landing site of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon) and Tricolour (the lunar surface where Chandrayaan-2 left its footprints) on the Moon. The moment will ever be etched in history and deeply embedded in our proud pleasant thoughts,” the VP said.

Further, he also mentioned India’s successful launch of the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), with which India became the first Asian country “to reach Martian orbit and the first in the world to do so in its maiden attempt”.

The VP noted that with each space mission — be it India’s first solar mission, Aditya-L1, or upcoming ambitious human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan — India has been “propelled onto the global stage of space exploration”.

Speaking of the future, VP Dhankhar said that “the coming decades will witness an unprecedented surge in space exploration. India, with its robust space programme and a growing pool of skilled professionals, is well-positioned to be a key player in this exciting journey”.

NDA constituents scoff at Lalu Yadav's 'weak govt' charge

Published

By

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) National Democratic Alliance (NDA) constituents on Saturday dismissed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ‘weak’ Central government claims and asserted that the “stable Central government” will remain in power until 2029.

Emphasising that India will make “rapid progress” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leader Vivek Thakur dismissed Lalu Yadav’s statement and said that there is “no need to take his words seriously.”

“It’s an old habit of his to make such remarks, and there’s no need to take his words seriously. He is a veteran leader. We’ve been seeing for three decades that he keeps saying something or the other,” said the BJP leader, adding that the NDA’s “historic win” has led to forming a “stable” government at the Centre for the next five years.

Responding to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav’s comments on law and order, Vivek Thakur criticised the Opposition, implying that “those associated with crime should not comment on such issues”.

“Those who are synonymous with crime and criminalisation should refrain from speaking on these subjects. Generation after generation, people are well aware of who is synonymous with crime,” he added.

JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar attacked Lalu Yadav, mocking him as a “self-styled fortune-teller” since his sentencing by the judiciary.

The JD(U) leader sarcastically suggested that the people of Bihar should consult Lalu Yadav with their birth charts but warned them to “avoid signing over their land.”

“After being sentenced by the judiciary, Lalu Yadav has found a new job as a fortune-teller. He has become a fortune-teller. We hope that the common people of Bihar should go with their birth charts to his residence, and he will see if they have a favourable position. However, don’t risk signing over your land when you meet him,” Neeraj Kumar said, adding that the RJD leader “doesn’t check his own fate.”

On Friday, Lalu Yadav had said that the ‘weak’ Central government led by PM Modi might collapse in August.

It's India's misfortune that Rahul Gandhi is the LoP: Haryana BJP MP

Published

on

By

Rohtak, July 6 (IANS) Haryana BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ram Chander Jangra said on Saturday that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ‘speaks without thinking’ and it is a misfortune for the country that he is Leader of the Opposition (LoP).

“The whole country is condemning what Rahul Gandhi said in the House. Gandhi speaks without intelligence. The whole country knows this. It is misfortune for our country that Rahul Gandhi is the LoP. Unfortunately, we don’t know for how many days we have to tolerate him,” Jangra told the media in Rohtak.

On Hathras stampede, he said that anyone could become a ‘baba’ (referring to Bhole Baba) by luring women.

“Baba should also be questioned on Hathras incident. He also had a responsibility to regulate the gathering. Not only this, the code of conduct and arrangements should be made for such gatherings.”

Regarding the BJP-JJP alliance in the state, which snapped in March this year, Jangra said the BJP has suffered a lot because of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP).

“This was an alliance of their compulsion. The way the current government of the state is working at present, it’s certain that the Bharatiya Janata Party is going to form the government again and the government is engaged in solving whatever problems the people are facing at the moment.”

With the ruling BJP in Haryana in battle mode for the Assembly elections slated for October, Union Home Minister Amit Shah last week chaired a brainstorming session of the party in Panchkula and announced that the BJP will fight the polls under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

BJP leaders said that two sessions were convened in Panchkula to review the party’s preparations for a 100-day roadmap to ensure that it retains power in the state for the third consecutive time.

The new government in Haryana was formed in March this year after the BJP severed its four-and-a-half-year-old ties with the JJP led by Dushyant Chautala, by Nayab Singh Saini succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar as the Chief Minister.

The Assembly has a total strength of 90 legislators.

However, after the death of Badshahpur legislator Rakesh Daultabad, the resignation of Power Minister Ranjit Singh, and that of Mullana legislator Varun Chaudhary after his election from the Ambala Lok Sabha seat, the House has 87 MLAs now.

The BJP, which has 41 MLAs, enjoys the support of Haryana Lokhit Party’s lone legislator Gopal Kanda, and Nayan Pal Rawat, an Independent legislator.

In Opposition, Congress has 29 legislators, the JJP has 10, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has one legislator.

Three Independents have extended their support to the Congress, while another Independent MLA, Balraj Kundu, has been voicing his opposition to the BJP.
