Tamluk to be toughest battle for Trinamool since 2009 as BJP aims for win

Kolkata, March 25 (IANS) The battle in Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency in East Midnapore district for Trinamool Congress seems to be the toughest since it first won the seat in 2009 by defeating the Left.

Swayed by the sentiments of the land movement at Nandigram, the then Trinamool Congress candidate from Tamluk, Suvendu Adhikari in 2009, emerged as the new game-changer in Bengal politics by defeating three-time sitting CPI(M) Lok Sabha member Lakhsman Chandra Seth by a margin of over 1,50,000 votes. Since then Tamluk virtually became a fortress for Trinamool Congress in the successive elections.

However, the situation is totally different this time in multiple perspectives thus making “Battleground Tamluk” the toughest turf for Trinamool Congress ever since 2009.

BJP has fielded former judge of Calcutta High Court Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who virtually became a national figure because of his crusade against corruption which was reflected in his subsequent judgements and observations in the cash-for- school job cases in West Bengal.

CPI(M) on the other hand has fielded young Calcutta High Court counsel Sayan Banerjee. Though way behind Gangopadhyay in national popularity, Banerjee, who is a fresher in politics, too has become quite popular in the civil society for his forceful arguments at the Calcutta High Court in favour of the illegally deprived candidates in the school-job case.

Caught in the midst of these two crusaders against corruption, the battle is tough for Trinamool Congress’ young candidate and the party’s social media face Debangshu Bhattacharya.

Since a large number of such school-job-deprived candidates come from East Midnapore district and many from Tamluk, this point can turn out to be a negative factor for Trinamool Congress in the electoral number-game.

The third factor is that the 2009 political game-changer of Tamluk, Suvendu Adhikari, is currently the leader of the opposition in West Bengal Assembly and is determined to wipe out Trinamool Congress not just in the seat but in the entire East Midnapore, a district where he has his ancestral roots and also the turf where he rose to his current political heights beginning as an ordinary student leader.

In fact, Trinamool Congress first felt the pinch of Adhikari’s influence in the district especially Tamluk in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections when he got elected from Nandigram, one of the seven Assembly constituencies under Tamluk defeating none else but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Last she got re-elected in the by-elections was from Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in Kolkata and retained her chair as the chief minister for the third consecutive term.

Adhikari said that the Trinamool Congress candidate stands nowhere in comparison to his competitor in BJP. “If one is the water of Ganga, the other is that from the gutter,” he said.

Gangopadhyay, himself understands that his crusader image against corruption is the unique selling point in the skyrocketing popularity among common people, in his subsequent speeches as BJP leader, he has only focussed on ending the current state regime which is laden with corruption.

The Trinamool Congress candidate is harping on his youth factor to gain the confidence of the voters. “The manner in which a youth in his twenties can promptly reach out to the voters and address their issues, I do not think that it will be possible for an individual in his late- sixties,” Bhattacharya said.

For CPI(M)’s lawyer-candidate the battle is to explain to the people on how the Left Front can be alternative to both BJP and Trinamool Congress in addressing and redressing the genuine grievances of the voters,

Tamluk, with a strength of over 15 lakh voters, has a combination of farming and industrial belts, with eastern India’s important port-cum-industrial hub of Haldia being under this constituency. It had been a traditional Left citadel from 1980, except once in the 1996 Lok Sabha polls when Congress candidate Jayanta Bhattacharya got elected by a margin of less than 8,000 votes.

However, since 2009 Tamluk became the virtual fort of Trinamool Congress, with Suvendu Adhikari being the game-changer. Now it is to be seen whether he can again turn out to be a game-changer and this time on behalf of the BJP.

BE receives WHO's Pre-qualification status for novel oral polio vaccine

Hyderabad, July 30 (IANS) Biological E. Limited (BE), a Hyderabad-based vaccine and pharmaceutical company, on Tuesday announced that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has granted Pre-qualification (PQ) status to their Novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2 (nOPV2).

nOPV2 is the 10th pre-qualified vaccine of BE. This next-generation live, attenuated oral vaccine significantly reduces the risk of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreaks and it is aimed at immunisation in countries that are affected by cVDPV2 outbreaks, the company said.

The persistent threat of cVDPV2 outbreaks can be tackled with the use of nOPV2 as the vaccine of choice. With its improved genetic stability, nOPV2 has a significantly decreased chance of seeding new outbreaks in low-immunity environments as against its predecessor, the Sabin poliovirus type 2 (mOPV2) vaccine, the BE said.

Extensive clinical trials have rigorously evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of nOPV2, leading to promising results published in The Lancet (2019-2024). Furthermore, the vaccine’s real-world deployment in outbreak regions has shown that it can significantly decrease the incidence of cVDPV2 outbreaks, safeguarding communities from the ravages of polio.

BE has become an important player in the production of the nOPV2 vaccine, having been selected for a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to assist in meeting the growing global demand.

In collaboration with PT BioFarma (PTB) in Indonesia, the first manufacturer of the nOPV2 vaccine to receive WHO Pre-Qualification in January 2024, BE has successfully received technology from PTB and qualified large-scale manufacturing facilities that produce more than 500 million doses of nOPV2 vaccine annually. BE has been approved by the Indian regulatory authorities to manufacture the vaccine for export purposes.

Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E. Limited, said that they are pleased to be a part of the global effort to eradicate polio. “Our collective quest to eradicate polio marks a significant milestone with the WHO pre-qualification of nOPV2. This vaccine has been specifically designed to address concerns about Vaccine-Associated Paralytic Polio (VAPP), which has occurred in approximately 2 to 4 cases per million births with the traditional OPV due to the vaccine virus reverting to a virulent form,” she said.

Expressing BE’s gratitude for the collaboration with PT BioFarma (PTB) and for the support of a grant from the Gates Foundation, she further said, “The significance of this milestone extends beyond scientific achievement; it represents a beacon of hope for millions of children and families around the globe. The achievement of administering over 1 billion doses of nOPV2 in outbreak regions is crucial to realising the dream of a polio-free world.’’

NCP MLA's car vandalised in Maha's Akola, blames MNS activists

Akola (Maharashtra), July 30 (IANS) NCP legislator and spokesman Amol Mitkari on Tuesday alleged that a group of activists belonging to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had vandalised his car.

The incident took place a day after Mitkari had led a scathing attack against the MNS chief, Raj Thackeray, after the latter’s sarcastic comments against the NCP national president and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The attack took place on the premises of a government rest house.

Mitkari reacted sharply after the attack saying, “They take the name of Maharashtra and commit hooliganism like this. This is a cowardly attack. I am not afraid of these attacks…If they (MNS) think that they can come to power by remaining in the MahaYuti it will not happen,” he said.

“I was in the rest house at the time of the attack. Some people came to see me. The attack was carried out by MNS workers. I have filed a complaint against this with the Superintendent of Police,’’ said Mitkari.

He further said that the MNS workers were standing outside the government rest house and tried to attack him.

Raj Thackeray on Monday had targeted Ajit Pawar in a press conference in Pune. Thackeray made a sarcastic comment: “Even though Ajit Pawar was not in Pune, the dams in Pune were filled.”

Immediately after Raj Thackeray’s remarks, Mitkari criticised Raj Thackeray saying that he has lost his credibility. “Questioning party president Ajit Pawar’s performance by the most unsuccessful person in the political history of Maharashtra so far is like pointing at the sun,” he added.
