Ratan Tata’s career is filled with remarkable achievements that span across industries and borders. Here are Ratan Tata’s top 10 achievements:
1. Acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR)
- In 2008, Tata Motors acquired Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for $2.3 billion. Despite initial doubts, Ratan Tata’s leadership turned the acquisition into a success story. JLR grew into a profitable and prestigious division of Tata Motors, showcasing Tata’s ability to revive struggling brands and make them globally competitive.
2. Launch of Tata Nano
- The Tata Nano, introduced in 2008, was Ratan Tata’s vision to provide an affordable car for Indian families. Although it did not achieve long-term commercial success, it was a revolutionary concept in automotive engineering, aimed at making cars accessible to the masses.
3. Transformation of Tata Group into a Global Conglomerate
- Under Ratan Tata’s leadership, Tata Group evolved from a primarily India-focused enterprise into a global powerhouse. By acquiring companies like Tetley (UK) in 2000, Corus (UK Steel) in 2007, and JLR, Tata Group extended its reach across multiple industries and continents. The group’s revenues rose from $5 billion in 1991 to over $100 billion when he retired in 2012.
4. Acquisition of Tetley Tea
- In 2000, Tata Tea (now Tata Global Beverages) acquired Tetley Tea, one of the world’s largest tea companies, for $435 million. This marked one of the first major international acquisitions by an Indian company and positioned Tata as a major player in the global beverage industry.
5. Leading the Tata Group Through Liberalization
- Ratan Tata became the Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, the same year that India’s economy underwent liberalization. Navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the opening of India’s markets, he positioned Tata Group as a key player both domestically and globally, with diversified operations in sectors like IT, steel, automobiles, and consumer goods.
6. Philanthropic Contributions
- Through Tata Trusts, which control about 66% of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata has supported numerous philanthropic causes. His contributions to education, healthcare, and rural development in India are monumental. Notable projects include funding for the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Tata Memorial Hospital, and several universities around the world. In 2014, Tata Trusts pledged ₹750 crore for the creation of the Tata Medical Center in Kolkata for cancer treatment.
7. Role in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
- During Ratan Tata’s tenure, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became India’s largest IT services company. Under his guidance, TCS was listed on the stock exchange in 2004, and it grew to become one of the world’s leading IT services firms, contributing significantly to the global reputation of the Tata Group.
8. Developing Tata Motors into a Global Player
- Under his leadership, Tata Motors evolved from being an Indian automaker to a global player. Besides the acquisition of JLR, Tata Motors also became known for its commercial vehicles and the introduction of affordable yet high-quality products like Tata Ace (India’s first mini-truck) and other passenger vehicles.
9. Handling the 26/11 Mumbai Attacks
- After the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, owned by the Tata Group, Ratan Tata personally oversaw the recovery and rebuilding efforts. He ensured that the families of the victims were compensated, including all affected hotel staff. His compassionate and transparent handling of the situation won him widespread respect.
10. Padma Vibhushan Award
- Ratan Tata was honored with India’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008, following the Padma Bhushan in 2000. These awards recognize his extraordinary contribution to Indian industry, his leadership in philanthropy, and his role in raising the profile of Indian businesses globally.
- These achievements underscore Ratan Tata’s visionary leadership, not only in transforming businesses but also in shaping India’s economy and global reputation. His legacy extends far beyond the corporate world, impacting society at large through philanthropy and nation-building efforts.

BJP opposes Nawab Malik’s candidacy
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashish Shelar stated on Tuesday that his party opposes the candidacy of Nationalist Congress Party leader Nawab Malik for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election on November 20.
“We will not accept a ticket for anyone linked to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim,” said Shelar, who is the Mumbai BJP president, during an interview with a news channel.
“We will not support Malik and will take a different stance,” he added.
His comments came in response to media reports suggesting that Malik, the sitting MLA from Anushakti Nagar in the Mumbai South-Central parliamentary constituency, may contest from Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar and allow his daughter Sana to run for the Anushakti Nagar seat as she seeks to enter electoral politics.
Malik served as a minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and was arrested in 2022 in a case initiated by the NIA against Dawood and his associates, including Chhota Shakeel and Tiger Memon.
He was granted bail on medical grounds in July this year. Following the split in the NCP, the faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar welcomed Malik into its fold, despite objections from its ally, the BJP.

Nilesh Rane switches party to contest an election
Nilesh Rane, son of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Narayan Rane, announced on Tuesday that he will join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and contest the Kudal assembly election.

Previously, Nilesh Rane was with the Congress and served as the MP for the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg constituency from 2009 to 2014. He joined the BJP in 2014 but lost in both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

MVA seat sharing to be fixed in a day or two
Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole announced on Tuesday that the seat-sharing arrangement for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the upcoming assembly elections will be finalized within a day or two. He noted that the situation within the rival Mahayuti alliance is more chaotic than in the MVA.
“The conditions in Mahayuti are more complicated than in the MVA. Seat-sharing takes time as we must consider our party workers. We will resolve our issues within a day or two. Balasaheb Thorat has met with Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, and I will meet with Thorat next. After that, we will hold the MVA seat-sharing meeting,” Patole told ANI.
He added, “The problem lies with about 25-30 seats, but it will be addressed soon.” Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved, emphasizing that the alliance has enough time.
“Things are being worked out. The seats in question are not too many… We have time and will resolve this quickly,” Thorat stated.
On October 20, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its first list of 99 candidates for the Maharashtra assembly elections.

Testing times for the airlines due to hoax threats
Advocate Yeshwant Shenoy, whose public interest litigation aimed at enhancing the safety of India’s airports and civil aviation security has been pending in the Bombay High Court for nearly a decade due to various delays, tells that the recent threats received by airlines—amounting to nearly 100 in just seven days—should not be dismissed as hoaxes. He emphasizes the urgent need for measures to strengthen aviation security.
“Always remember, security agencies must be correct 100% of the time, while the wrongdoers only need one successful attempt from a hundred plots,” warns Shenoy, who is based in Ernakulam and has consistently challenged the civil aviation ministry to enhance the safety and security of airline passengers in India.
