Odisha LS/Assembly polls: Rebels emerge as key worry for all three major parties in the state

Bhubaneswar, April 5 (IANS) With the declaration of candidates for the simultaneous elections to the Assembly and the Lok Sabha, Odisha’s three major political parties, the ruling Biju Janata Dal, the Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have been facing a tough task to quell the rebellion by leaders denied tickets.

Disappointed aspirants are either jumping to other parties or announcing to contest as independent candidates in their respective constituencies. Similarly, many aspirants, along with their supporters, have been protesting at the party headquarters demanding reconsideration of the decision.

Talking to media persons, senior BJD leader Padmanabh Behera said: “There have always been rebels in politics. This time, the number of rebels is a bit more in number.”

He said that BJD has the expertise in winning elections by successfully dealing with such rebellions.

Several leaders tendered their resignations from the party within hours of it declaring its candidates list on Wednesday.

MLA Parshuram Dhada and former Phubani MLA Debendra Kanhar were among those who quit soon after Chief Minister and party President Naveen Patnaik announced the second list of candidates for Assembly seats.

Similarly, two more senior leaders from Berhampur – Rama Chandra Panda and T. Gopi – resigned from the party on Thursday.

“I was a ticket aspirant for the Berhampur Lok Sabha seat in 2019 but the party fielded Chandrashekar Sahu who joined the BJD after leaving the Congress. Though I have been keen to contest the Lok Sabha polls, I was again denied a ticket this time despite serving the party over the years. The party has only given assurances to me every time,” said Panda, a former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

Heavyweight and Bhadrak constituency aspirant, Asit Patnaik and senior Jagatsinghpur leader Amarendra Das have also quit.

Similarly, the BJP has been seeing severe protests by some leaders denied tickets.

Overlooked aspirants held meetings with their supporters at many places in the state and decided to oppose the candidates announced by the party in their respective areas. Ex-MLA and senior leader Debaraj Mohanty has resigned from the party after being denied a ticket to contest elections from the Aska constituency in Ganjam district, and so did Sonali Sahu following her displeasure over ticket allotment. Soon, she rejoined the Congress.

A continuous exodus of leaders has turned into the biggest headache for the Congress even before the announcement of the candidates’ list for a majority of seats in the state.

Many senior leaders, including sitting MLAs, have resigned from the party and many of them have joined the ruling BJD. They include sitting MLA Adhiraj Panigrahi, ex-MLA Chiranjib Biswal, ex-minister Ganeswar Behera, and ex-MP Surendra Singh Bhoi.

Amarnath Yatra 2024 breaks records with 4.71 lakh devotees in 32 days

Amarnath Yatra 2024 breaks records with 4.71 lakh devotees in 32 days

Jammu, July 31 (IANS) Over 4.71 lakh devotees had ‘darshan’ during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra so far breaking last year’s entire Yatra record of 4.45 lakh pilgrims as another batch of 1,654 pilgrims left Jammu for the Valley on Wednesday, said officials.

“This number is more than last year’s total pilgrim number of 4.45 lakh who went to Amarnath cave shrine during the entire Yatra period. Yesterday, 5,000 devotees performed the Yatra while a new batch of 1,654 left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu for the Valley in two escorted convoys. Both convoys left for the Valley at 3.20 a.m.,” the officials said.

“First escorted convoy of 17 vehicles carrying 456 pilgrims left for the North Kashmir Baltal base camp. The second escorted convoy of 34 vehicles carrying 1,198 Yatris left for the South Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp”, officials said.

Arrangements of security, community kitchens (Langars), transit and base camps and the ubiquitous presence of security forces all along the highway from Jammu to Kashmir have ensured a safe, smooth and hassle-free Yatra this year.

The most important helping hand to the Yatris is provided by the locals. These locals employ ponies and work as porters for the pilgrims often carrying the weak and infirm devotees on their back up and down the treacherous mountain route on both sides of approach.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that this ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

The cave is situated at an altitude of 3,888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas. Devotees approach the cave shrine either from the traditional South Kashmir Pahalgam route or the North Kashmir Baltal route.

The Pahalgam-Cave shrine axis is 48 Km long and takes Yatris 4-5 days to reach the shrine. The Baltal-Cave shrine axis is 14 Km long and takes one day for the pilgrims to have ‘darshan’ and return to the base camp.

Helicopter services are also available for the pilgrims both at Baltal on the North Kashmir route and at Chandanwari on the South Kashmir route.

This year’s Yatra will conclude after 52 days on August 19 coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan festivals.

The rescue teams from the Army, Air Force, Navy, NDRF, police, Fire Force and locals were engaged in the operations till late into Tuesday night and were back early on Wednesday.

The rescue teams are now trying to search the destroyed homes to look for survivors.

The NDRF and defence rescue teams had been able to transport more than 500 people holed up in certain areas of the affected spots by late Tuesday night
