IPL 2024: Dominant Chennai Super Kings outplay Gujarat Titans in 63-run victory (Ld)
Chennai, March 27 (IANS) A dominant Chennai Super Kings came up with a clinical bowling performance after Shivam Dube hammered a 23-ball 51 while Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad set a frantic pace with a whirlwind 46 each to lay a solid foundation to help them thoroughly outplay Gujarat Titans by 63 runs in Match 7 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Tuesday.
In a replay of the 2023 final that Chennai won to win their fifth IPL title, Dube blazed to his half-century off 22 balls, hammering five sixes and two fours after Ravindra had set the pace with a sensational 20-ball 46 and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad had contributed a more sedate 46 off 36 balls, hitting five boundaries and one six.
Chennai posted a massive 206/6 off 20 overs and with the scoreboard pressure working for them, they bowled superbly and fielded brilliantly to restrict Gujarat Titans to 143/8 in 20 overs and registered an impressive win, their second of the 2024 edition after they had started with a victory over Royal Challengers Bengalury in the tournament opener.
Deepak Chahar struck two quick blows including the early wicket of Gujarat Titans’ skipper Shubman Gill as CSK maintained their control of the match and did not allow Gujarat Titans to fight back. Chahar struck the deadly blow in the third over of the innings when he trapped Shubman Gill LBW as the ball pitched on the good length stayed a tad low and hit the Gujarat skipper on the pad. Gill reviews it but could not get it overturned as DRS goes with the umpire’s call.
The 2022 IPL winner lost their first wicket with 28 runs on the board. They failed to wrest back the momentum, losing three wickets for 55 in the eighth over and never recovered. The Chennai pacers claimed six of the eight wickets to fall as they used the conditions well on a pitch that had slightly more grass than usual.
Chahar (2-28 off 4) also got Gujarat’s other opener, Wriddhiman Saha for 21 off 17, forcing him to lob a catch to Tushar Deshpande as Gujarat slumped to 34/2 in the fifth over. Saha had started well, hitting four boundaries but could not score a big one as CSK maintained the same high intensity that they produced while batting.
Gujarat failed to recover from those setbacks and continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as Chennai bowlers did a splendid job while they also fielded and caught superbly to maintain the pressure on Gujarat Titans. Rachin Ravindra picked three well-judged catches while Ajinkya Rahane pulled off a brilliant diving catch to enthral thousands of CSK fans who packed the stadium. Sai Sudharsan top-scored for Gujarat Titans with 37 off 31 balls, hitting three boundaries while David Miller struck a 16-ball 21 as both of them perished while trying to shore up the scoring rate. Gujarat Titans eventually finished with 143/8 in 20 overs.
While Chahar claimed 2-28 and Mustafizur Rahman, who continued to impress in CSK’s second match, took 2-30, Tushar Deshpande was the best bowler of the day for CSK with 2-21.
Gujarat Titans were thoroughly outplayed as their bowlers were hammered and they lost too many wickets in the Power-play (43/2). Chennai were relentless in their pursuit as their bowlers used the short ball well, varied the pace, and did not allow Gujarat Titans batters many opportunities.
Earlier, CSK got off to a whirlwind start after Shubman Gill won the toss for Gujarat Titans and elected to bowl first. New Zealander Rachin Ravindra was the main reason for their brilliant start as he went hammer and tongs at the pacers to help CSK race to 50 in the fifth over. As the Gujarat pacers attempted to use the short ball against him, Ravindra repeatedly used the pull shot to get onto the top of the Titans’ bowling.
Ravindra, who got a chance to open the innings as his compatriot Devon Conway pulled out with an injury, pulled, drove, ramped, and flicked off his hips as he hammered the Gujarat Titans pacers. Ravindra struck the experienced Umesh Yadav for a six and four off successive balls twice — in the second and fourth overs. He picked a delivery off his hips into the crowd and followed it up with a slash over point for a four in the second over. In the fourth over, he repeated the act, hitting Umesh straight over the ropes off a length delivery on the stumps. The next ball was he stepped away from the leg stump and cracked it along the carpet through point and cover-point for a boundary.
In between, the 24-year-old New Zealander cracked boundaries off successive balls off Afghan pacer Azmatullah Omarzai. In the fifth over, Ravindra hammered a six and four in three deliveries against Azmatullah Omarzai as he raced to 42 off 18 balls. Rashid Khan eventually had the measure of him in the sixth over when he foxed Ravindra with a quicker one about which the batter had no idea and Saha whipped off the bails as the batter ventured out of the crease to complete the shot. Rachin was stumped for 46 off 20 balls and CSK were 62/1 in the sixth over.
CSK skipper Gaikwad, who was a spectator as Ravindra was going great guns, took over the scoring and uncorked some superb shots as CSK set an electrifying pace. Gaikwad, who was dropped by Sai Kishore at slip off Omarzai when on 1, punished Gujarat Titans as he hammered some superb shots, hitting five boundaries and one six to score 46 off 36 balls, hitting his lone six off Spencer Johnson.
There was no respite for Gujarat Titans as Shivam Dube got into the act and waded into the bowlers, hitting sixes at will as he completed a well-deserved half-century. Dube blasted five sixes and two boundaries as CSK maintained a healthy scoring rate despite losing Ajinkya Rahane for a run-a-ball 12.
Dube maintained the momentum for CSK with brilliant power-hitting, using raw power to unleash some massive sixes. He was very good against the spinners, starting his knock with sixes on successive balls off Sai Kishore for his first two scoring shots. He also picked Rashid Khan’s googly and deposited it into the crowd over long-on.
Dube treated Spencer Johnson to a four followed by a six off a delivery banged in short in the 15th over. A six off Mohit Sharma in the 19th over followed by a brace helped him reach his fifty before Rashid Khan accounted for the left-hander from Mumbai as he got him with a googly, This time Dube mistimed his shot that came off the bottom of the bat and was caught by Vijay Shankar at extra cover.
The CSK onslaught continued as 20-year-old Sameer Rizvi, who came in next hammered 14 runs off four balls from Rashid, hitting the Afghanistan spinner for a six off the first ball, going down on one knee and sweeping hard over the deep backward square fence, and a couple of balls later, jumped down the track to blast a length ball clear over long-off for another maximum.
Mohit Sharma got him in the final over, getting him to loft straight down the throat of David Miller as CSK ended their 20 overs with 206/6, leaving Gujarat Titans a big chase on a wicket that still looks good for batting. In the end that did not materialise as Gujarat Titans lost by a big margin.

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) The newly appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir is reportedly pushing for the inclusion of former Dutch cricketer Ryan ten Doeschate into the team’s coaching staff.
Ryan ten Doeschate recently collaborated with Gambhir at the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he contributed as the team’s fielding coach during their victorious 2024 campaign.
Beyond his role with KKR, Ten Doeschate holds multiple positions within the franchise’s subsidiaries, including in the Caribbean Premier League, Major League Cricket, and ILT20.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, Gambhir, who has requested a free hand in managing the team, wants the 44-year-old Dutch as one of his key associates. However, the final decision rests with the BCCI, which has recently favoured hiring only Indian personnel for coaching roles.
Earlier, reports claimed that Abhishek Nayar, a former India all-rounder and integral part of the KKR backroom team, is likely to join Gambhir’s team as an assistant coach.
The ongoing deliberation revolves around the role Ryan ten Doeschate could potentially take up if selected but the BCCI wants to retain T Dilip, a member of Rahul Dravid’s existing coaching team, for the position of fielding coach, the report added.

World Championship of Legends: South Africa beat India; Australia clinch big win over West Indies
Northampton, July 11 (IANS) South Africa Champions defeated India Champions while Australia Champions prevailed over West Indies Champions in the last two league games of the World Championship of Legends 2024 here at County Ground.
With that, the league stage came to an end and the four semi-finalists have been locked in.
Pakistan Champions will take on West Indies Champions in the first semifinal while the second will be played between Australia and India on Friday. The winners of the respective games will play the summit clash on Saturday.
In the first match of the day, led by an explosive century from Ben Dunk and a near-century from Daniel Christian, Australia Champions set a commanding total of 274 for 7 in their 20 overs after they were put in to bat first.
Dunk’s 100 off 35 balls, featuring 10 fours and 7 sixes, set the tone for a high-scoring innings. Christian followed with a rapid 99 off 35 balls, which included 11 fours and 8 sixes, ensuring the Australia Champions posted a formidable total. Rayad Emrit was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, taking 4 wickets for 56 runs.
In response, the West Indies Champions started their chase with a early setback, losing Kirk Edwards for just 5 runs. Dwayne Smith led a spirited effort, smashing 64 off 40 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. His aggressive approach gave the West Indies hope, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
They were struggling at 81 for 4 at one stage before a middle-order resilience was showcased by Ashley Nurse, who played a remarkable innings, scoring an unbeaten 70 off 36 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes. His late partnership with captain Daren Sammy, who contributed 33 off 18 balls, added some respectability to the score.
However, the required run rate kept climbing, and despite Nurse’s valiant efforts, the West Indies Champions fell short of the target, finishing their innings at 219 for 6 in 20 overs.
Brett Lee and Peter Siddle were instrumental in controlling the run chase, taking 2 wickets each as Australians secured a comfortable victory by 55 runs.
In another action, riding upon blistering half-centuries from opener Jacques Synman and wicketkeeper Richard Levi, the South Africa Champions posted a total of 210/8 in 20 overs, and the bowlers restricted India to 156/6 in the allotted 20 overs to end their campaign on a winning note.
Synman, who scored an unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in the previous game, once again showcased his batting prowess and blasted 73 off 43 balls (10x4s, 3x6s) to lay a solid foundation for his team.
Later, Levi smashed a 25-ball 60, with 5 sixes and as many boundaries, and helped his team dominate the middle overs. While the Indian bowlers did make a strong comeback in the death overs, they couldn’t prevent the Proteas from posting a big total.
Harbhajan Singh (4/25) was the pick of the bowlers for India as the Turbanator rolled back the clock with his off-spin bowling.
Indian openers failed to give their team a good start in the run chase and their top five were back in the dugout with just 77 runs on the board in 11.3 overs. Yusuf Pathan (54* off 44) and Irfan Pathan (35 off 21) shared a vital stand but couldn’t help their side cross the finish line as the asking rate kept getting higher. India lost the game by 54 runs eventually.

Charlotte (US), July 11 (IANS) Following Uruguay’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Copa America semifinals, a heated altercation erupted in the stands involving Uruguayan players and Colombian supporters.
The incident, which occurred after the final whistle on Wednesday evening, saw Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez at the heart of the chaos.
As Uruguayan players approached the stands, a confrontation with Colombian fans quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Punches were thrown, and objects, including beverages and food, were hurled between the two groups. Broadcast footage captured the intense scene, involving both players and spectators, according to Spanish national sports daily Marca.
The Copa America organising body has condemned the “act of violence”, saying “There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field”.
“Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into cheering on their national teams and having an unforgettable party,” it said in a statement.
Colombia extended its unbeaten streak to 28 games after beating Uruguay 1-0 on Wednesday night and qualified for the Copa America final, where on Sunday it will seek its second continental title in its history against Argentina.
After the semfinal loss, Uruguay will play Canada at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday to determine third place.

Charlotte (US), July 11 (IANS) Midfielder James Rodriguez surpassed Argentine great Lionel Messi’s record of most assists for goals in a single edition of the Copa America.
The pass for Jefferson Lerma to score was his 6th assist in the tournament, making him the player with the most assists in a single edition since 2011, when the statistic began to be computed.
The previous mark belonged to Messi, who had registered 5 assists in the Copa América 2021.
With this sixth assist, Colombia’s number 10 achieved his fourth game out of five with at least one assist. He started with two in the victory against Paraguay. He added one more against Costa Rica and another two in the 5-0 against Panama, in the quarterfinals.
Colombia defeated Uruguay 1-0 to advance to the final, which will be held on Sunday in Miami. Awaiting them are Argentina, as Lionel Messi and Co. look to make it a second consecutive Copa America title.

Charlotte (US), July 11 (IANS) Colombia beat Uruguay 1-0 to extend their 28 game unbeaten streak and earning a place in Copa America final late on Wednesday night.
Colombia is headed to Miami Gardens to play Argentina in the Grand Final at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday while Uruguay will stay in Charlotte to play Canada at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday to determine third place.
The first 10 minutes saw two juggernauts cautiously testing each other, resulting in only one shot. Colombia appeared more likely to create the first big chance, but it was Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez who came close.
Nunez battled past multiple Colombian defenders in the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot to the bottom left corner, narrowly missing. Despite several chances, the Uruguayan striker couldn’t score.
After losing center back Ronald Araujo to injury against Brazil, Uruguay suffered another blow as Rodrigo Bentancur went off injured in the 35th minute with Guillermo Varela replacing him.
In the 40th minute, Colombia finally broke through as James Rodriguez’s set-piece delivery leading to a headed goal. Rodriguez’s whipped corner found Jefferson Lerma, who powered it into Rochet’s near post.
This goal marked a milestone for Colombia’s captain, as he broke Lionel Messi’s record for the most assists in a single tournament edition with his sixth, giving Colombia the lead in the semifinal.
In the 45th minute, the match shifted as Daniel Munoz received a second yellow card, reducing Colombia to 10 men just before halftime.
By the 70th minute, the game became increasingly stretched. Uruguayan legend Luis Suarez, coming on as a substitute, had a great chance at the top of the box, but his shot grazed the side of the post.
In the 87th minute, Colombia’s Mateus Uribe missed a one-on-one chance after a Uruguayan defensive mistake. During seven minutes of stoppage time, Uribe had another one-on-one, but Rochet made a crucial save, deflecting the shot off the bar.
Uruguay held on for the final minutes, and a last-gasp effort was blocked by a Colombian defender.
