IANS Bookshelf: From making money to menstruation, the eclectic world of non-fiction titles

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) Now that the long Eid weekend is behind us and we are in the thick of work, it may be a good idea to spend the evenings unwinding with a book, instead of waiting to catch up with the latest OTT release. Here’s our selection of four non-fiction titles to help you charge your grey cells and enhance your knowledge bank.

Our subjects include a philosophy for everyday life, tips on optimising wealth and attaining financial security, an insight into the politics of Uttar Pradesh, and menstruation and its mysterious connection with the moon.

William Mulligan, The Everyday Stoic: Simple Rules For A Good Life (Penguin, Rs 550)

Popular on Instagram as ‘The Everyday Stoic’, the page deconstructs, modernises and makes the ancient wisdom of Stoicism practical.

The philosophy of Stoicism encourages the development of self-control as a means to overcome destructive emotions. According to the principles of Stoicism, getting clear and unbiased in one’s thinking allows one to understand universal reason.

Deconstructing the core of Stoicism, namely, virtues such as wisdom, courage, justice and moderation, helps make a person much more resilient in regular modern life, bringing clarity and strength.

Tracing the history and origin of this philosophy, the book serves to refine one’s thinking, showing how the ancient Roman philosophers Marcus Aurelius and Seneca remain relevant and helpful in day-to-day problem-solving.

Like it says in the book: “We all deserve to flourish. It’s only fair if we all get a chance to learn how to live better, for ourselves and for the people we love.” This book is a lens to look at your life afresh.

Shyamlal Yadav, At the Heart of Power: The Chief Ministers Of Uttar Pradesh (Rupa, Rs 395)

If there is one state in India that could serve as India’s indicator of its electoral and political future, it is Uttar Pradesh, and this very fact explains the political significance of the province.

The author, an award-winning journalist with ‘The Indian Express’, delves into the lives of all its 21 Chief Ministers thus far, beginning with the years immediately after Independence to the present.

Panning the spotlight on personalities, from Govind Ballabh Pant to Yogi Adityanath, and their distinguishing qualities, each leader is presented in the light of their politics and imperatives of staying in power. How they dealt with and triumphed over trying times and details of the socio-political landscape during their years in office have contributed significantly to shape the state into what it has become today.

Yadav’s exhaustively researched book presents the legacy of 21 stalwarts, their policies, ideologies and leadership styles. By understanding them, we will be able to appreciate the complexities of governing the state better.

Scott Galloway, The Algebra Of Wealth: A Simple Formula For Success (Torva-Penguin, Rs 899)

Wealth is not all about just money. So, what must one have apart from an understanding of wealth? The author says it is stoicism, followed by a mindful understanding of focus, time management in the larger sense of the expression, and diversification with regard to economic security.

Much like the intricacies and equations of algebra, Galloway decodes the mathematics of wealth, splitting it as “Focus + (Stoicism x Time x Diversification)”. In a little over half a ream, drawing the difference between having money and being rich, the author has condensed his learnings as a professor, mentor, founder and parent.

Drawing on the author’s experience, this book offers insights into how to not just get rich, but also attain financial security. And it leaves the reader with a thought to be mulled over: “If money is the goal, you’ll never have enough.”

A professor of Marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business, Galloway has founded nine companies and authored books like ‘The Four and The Algebra Of Happiness’. He is the founder of an online education platform that teaches business strategies to working professionals.

Nirmala Gowda Nayak, Menstruation: Moon, Men and More (Rupa, Rs 1,095)

An offering on “living harmoniously and holistically”, the book encapsulates what is often a debate on public forums or sigh-laden utterance in quiet corners: the need for rest, reflection and rejuvenation during menstruation — and smashing taboos around it.

Clearing out misconceptions surrounding menstruation, the author seeks to celebrate the woman’s womb as a symbol of femininity and power. The book serves as a means to awaken a less-informed community to the reality of this naturalness and understand and address impediments faced by women in the times we live.

A handy guidebook to help you comprehend menstrual health, understand the requirements of emotional well-being, and the nutritional needs of individual body types with a holistic outlook, it calls for as much awareness and mindful engagement of men and encourages them to help create an environment of acceptance and respect.

Nirmala Gowda Nayak is a proponent of menstrual health education and women’s empowerment through yoga and emotional well-being workshops.

Wayanad landslide disaster toll reaches 70, many missing

Kozhikode, July 30 (IANS) The death toll in the Wayanad landslide tragedy on Tuesday reached 70 and several people were reported missing in the worst affected areas, said officials, adding that hundreds are injured and admitted to different hospitals.

The worst affected areas are Churalpara, Velarimala, Mundakayil and Pothukalu. The locals from these areas who managed to escape are deeply shattered by the extent of the tragedy.

Bhavya, the principal of the VHSE School in Velarimala, has been frantically trying to reach out to her students. So far she has been able to talk to 560 students and 22 remained unreachable.

“There are 582 students in my school and I am yet to contact 22. I hope they are safe and I only believe that their phones are out of charge. It’s been raining heavily for the past two days. In the fury, there has been damage to our school. I spoke to many of my teachers also,” said Bhavvya.

Mundakayil is another area which has been badly affected by nature’s fury. NDRF members have reached the area and have commenced search operations as the place has been devastated and numerous houses destroyed.

The Army, NDRF, Fire Force, Police and an army of people from nearby affected areas are engaged in what is being termed the biggest rescue operations in the state.

An NDRF official said the inclement weather, especially the heavy rain in the worst affected areas, is hampering rescue operations.

“There are areas which we are yet to reach because of the bad weather and we are doing everything to reach such areas,” said the NDRF official.

Saffad, who hails from Mundakayil, said his parents have been moved to a safe place, but there is a big number who cannot be reached and there is no information about them.

Another resident Shafeek said he along with around 300 people from the area is now staying put in a resort. “We have been informed the NDRF teams have reached near us and we are waiting to be rescued and wish they reach us quickly,” said Shafeek.

Meanwhile, there are reports from Churalpara that a fresh landslide has occurred in the area and it was raining heavily in the area, leaving the rescue team members in a tight spot.

State Revenue Minister K. Rajan, who along with three other Ministers was en route to the affected areas, said teams from MEG Bengaluru and an Army team from the state capital are being airlifted.

“The rain is causing huge trouble and another issue the rescue operations are facing is the presence of a large number of people who are coming to the affected areas. This is affecting the smooth passage of crucial rescue operators to reach the area, as the roads are all crowded. We all know people are empathic towards sufferings, but our request is people should for no reason travel to the affected areas,” said Rajan.

A 50-member Naval team from Kochi was also reaching Wayanad.

The landslides were reported to have occurred at around 2 a.m.

Suspect nabbed from Karnataka admits to killing Uran girl: Navi Mumbai police (Ld)

Navi Mumbai, July 30 (IANS) Navi Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police Deepak Sakore said that the prime suspect – nabbed from Karnataka for the murder of a 22-year-old Belapur girl – has confessed to committing the crime, here on Tuesday.

Sakore said that the suspect, Dawood M. Shaikh was nabbed by a Navi Mumbai police team from Shahapur hills in Gulbarga district, is being brought to Mumbai for further investigations soon.

“As per the preliminary questioning by the police, he has admitted to killing the girl… More details including the motive, shall emerge after we properly interrogate him here,” Sakore told media persons.

The Navi Mumbai Police, deploying tech intel, tracked and arrested Shaikh, a professional driver early on Tuesday, for the gruesome killing of Yashashri Shinde, whose mutilated body was found late on the night of July 26 in the bushes near the Uran railway station.

As the incident snowballed into a huge political row, the Navi Mumbai Police formed eight probe teams which were hot on Shaikh’s trail, though he had gone incommunicado for the past three days after fleeing from here to Karnataka.

Sakore said that from the preliminary autopsy, it has been concluded that the victim died of multiple stab wounds, but her face may have been disfigured by dogs or some other animals in the vicinity.

On July 25, Yashashri left her home in Belapur ostensibly to meet a friend but failed to return, after which her family lodged a missing complaint.

According to Sakore, the victim had gone to meet Shaikh, who lived in Uran for the past several years, and they had been friends for 3-4 years, so the kidnap angle is ruled out.

On July 26 night, her body was found in a mutilated state with multiple injuries and the family immediately accused Shaikh, and the Navi Mumbai lodged a FIR early on July 27, he said.

On Monday, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Ambadas Danve and Kishori Pednekar, besides the ruling ally Bharatiya Janata Party’s leaders Kirit Somaiya and MLA Mahesh Baldi, called on the family of Yashashri Shinde to express solidarity and assure justice for their daughter; while MLA Nitesh Raut will visit today.

Delhi coaching centre deaths: HC agrees to hear PIL on Wednesday

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday agreed to hear on Wednesday a PIL seeking the constitution of a high-level committee to inquire into the city’s Rajinder Nagar coaching centre incident wherein three UPSC aspirants died in a basement following heavy rain.

Acting Chief Justice Manmohan assured advocate Rudra Vikram Singh, who appeared on behalf of the PIL litigant and mentioned the plea for an urgent hearing, that the matter will be listed on Wednesday.

The PIL said that due to “huge corruption” in public departments many people have been losing their lives for years and the national capital has faced many terrible and scary incidents in the past few years.

“In Delhi, more than 50 per cent of the commercial buildings are running in an illegal manner and many of them are running in residential areas that too without having any proper approval and clearances, and the respondents (authorities) are well aware of their illegal functioning but are allowing them just for the sake of some bribery amount,” it said.

The plea said that the right to die with dignity is also a fundamental right like as right to life with dignity as provided by Article 21 of the Constitution of India, however, the Delhi authorities failed to provide life with dignity or at least the right to die with dignity to the citizens and people are dying because of their “negligence”.

It may be recalled that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday formed a committee to inquire about the incident claiming three lives in the national capital on Saturday

In a post on X, the MHA said, “We have constituted a committee to inquire about the unfortunate incident at a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar in New Delhi. The committee will inquire into the reasons, fix responsibility, suggest measures, and recommend policy changes.”

The committee, comprising the Additional Secretary (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs), Principal Secretary (Home) Delhi, Special Commissioner of Delhi Police, Fire Advisor, and the Joint Secretary (MHA), will submit its report within 30 days.

On Saturday evening, three UPSC aspirants lost their lives after heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in the basement of a coaching institute in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar area, which was being used illegally as a library.

The incident trapped 17 other students for several hours, highlighting the dire safety issues in these establishments.

The basement of the coaching centre was used as a library in violation of the rules since the space was allowed to be used only for parking and storage purposes.
