Chevella: Same key contestants but with different political identities

Published

on

Hyderabad, March 23 (IANS) The winner and runner-up of the 2019 elections in the Chevella Lok Sabha constituency will be taking on each other this time on the tickets of different parties.

Sitting MP G. Ranjith Reddy will be entering the fray as a Congress candidate because the Bharat Rashtra Sami (BRS) has denied him renomination.

A couple of days after switching loyalties to the Congress party, Ranjith Reddy managed to get the ticket from the state’s ruling party.

He will be taking on Konda Vishweshwar Reddy of the BJP while Kasani Gnaneshwar Mudiraj of BRS will be the third key contestant in the constituency comprising Assembly segments on the fringes of Hyderabad.

Vishweshwar Reddy, who was elected from Chevella in 2014 on a TRS (now BRS) ticket, contested unsuccessfully as Congress candidate in the previous election. This time he is testing his political fortunes on BJP ticket.

Created in 2009 as a result of the delimitation of constituencies, Chevella has so far witnessed three elections. Senior Congress leader S. Jaipal Reddy was elected from here in 2009.

The BRS, which is looking for a hat-trick, has fielded Kasani Gnaneshwar Mudiraj, who resigned as Telugu Desam Party (TDP) state chief and joined BRS last year after TDP decided not to contest the elections in Telangana.

Political analysts say BRS will face a daunting task in retaining the seat as it has considerably weakened after losing power to Congress in November 2023 polls.

Defections by some key leaders have dealt a blow to the KCR-led party. Former minister and MLC Patnam Mahender Reddy, his wife Sunitha Reddy, who is also the chairperson of Vikarabad Zilla Parishad, former MLA from Maheswaram Teegala Krishna Reddy and his daughter Teegala Anitha Reddy, chairperson of Rangareddy Zilla Parishad, are among the BRS leaders, who have switched loyalties to Congress.

Chevella Lok Sabha constituency comprises seven Assembly segments — Maheswaram, Rajendranagar, Serilingampally, Chevella, Pargi, Vikarabad and Tandur.

In the recent Assembly elections, BRS made a clean sweep of the four Assembly segments that fall in the Rangareddy district while Congress captured three segments.

Maheswaram segment is represented by former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, who had switched loyalties from Congress to BRS after her election in 2018.

Vikarabad segment is represented by Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.

Results of previous elections in Chevella show BJP did not have much presence in the constituency. However, in recent Assembly elections it did well in some Assembly segments like Maheshwaram and Rajendranagar, where it stood second.

In 2019, Ranjith Reddy won the seat by a margin of 14,317 votes against his nearest rival Visheweshwar Reddy. While Ranjith Reddy was polled 5,28,148 votes, Vishweshwar Reddy secured 5,13,831 votes. BJP’s B. Janardhan Reddy had secured 2,01,960.

In 2014, TDP had contested Chevella in alliance with the BJP. The party had finished a close third. In 2009 polls, BJP had secured 1.12 lakh votes.

Former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, who represents Maheshwaram constituency, has vowed to present the victory in Chevella as a gift to BRS President and former chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. The family of Sabitha Indra Reddy, which has considerable following in Chevella, is working actively for the BRS candidate.

Sabitha’s son P. Kartik Reddy tipped to be fielded as BRS candidate. However, the leadership decided to give tickets to Gnaneshwar. Kartik Reddy had unsuccessfully contested in 2014 as Congress candidate.

T. Prakash Goud, the BRS MLA from Rajendranagar, does not agree that BRS has weakened. “Both Ranjith Reddy and Vishweshwar Reddy have betrayed BRS but the cadres remain loyal and active,” he said while exuding confidence of the BRS victory.

Kasani Gnaneshwar was heading TDP’s Telangana unit before he joined BRS. After TDP decided not to contest the Telangana Assembly polls, he resigned from the party. He had served as a member of Legislative Council in erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh from 2007 to 2011.

Belonging to the Mudiraj community, Gnaneshwar’s nomination as BRS candidate has been welcomed by the party leaders in the constituency. They say their leader KCR kept his word given to Gnaneshwar when he joined BRS.

While this is the first election in Chevella for Gnaneshwar, Vishweshwar Reddy is contesting for the third time. In 2014, he was elected on the TRS (now BRS) ticket. He quit BRS and joined Congress a few months before 2019 elections, citing alleged neglect of leaders who fought for Telangana in BRS.

An engineer and entrepreneur, Vishweshwar Reddy is a grandson of Konda Venkata Ranga Reddy, former deputy chief minister in undivided Andhra Pradesh, and son of Justice Konda Madhava Reddy, former chief justice of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. He is the son-in-law of Pratap C Reddy, the founder and chairman of Apollo Hospitals. Vishweshwar Reddy’s wife Sangita Reddy is the joint managing director of Apollo Hospitals.

Sangita Reddy has already started campaigning for her husband in the constituency. She is meeting people in the constituency seeking support for Vishweshwar Reddy.

In 2019, Vishweshwar Reddy was the second richest candidate in Lok Sabha elections in the country. He had then declared family assets of Rs 895 crore assets.

He is confident that people will vote for BJP as it is the best and reliable option. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s visionary leadership has the support of people across the country. People irrespective of caste and community are backing BJP. As Chevalla stands at the cusp of transformative growth, a vote for BJP is a vote for a brighter future,” he said.

Ranjit Reddy, a successful entrepreneur, had made his electoral debut on winning note in 2019.

Accused in minor’s murder dies by suicide in Andhra

Published

By

Visakhapatnam, July 11 (IANS) The accused in the murder of a minor girl in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalle district has allegedly committed suicide, police said on Thursday.

Police, who were on the hunt for the accused for four days, found Bodabathula Suresh’s decomposed body on the outskirts of Koppigondapalem village of Rambilli Mandal.

Police suspect that the accused consumed poison to kill himself. His body was shifted to the government hospital, Anakapalle for autopsy.

Suresh (26) had fatally stabbed a 14-year-old minor girl, studying in Class 9, in Koppigondapalem village on July 6.

Police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 to those who provide information about the absconding accused.

Hailing from Koppungundupalem in Rambilli mandal, Suresh was working as a driver.

The accused used to stalk the minor girl and wanted to marry her when she came of age. However, the girl’s parents had rejected his proposal. As she continued to harass the girl, her parents had lodged a complaint with the police in April.

Suresh was arrested and sent to jail under relevant sections of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. After coming out on bail a few weeks ago, he decided to take revenge on the victim, holding her responsible for his imprisonment.

On July 6 when the victim’s parents were out on work, Suresh barged into her house and slit her throat.

After committing the crime, he went into hiding. Police had constituted 12 teams to nab him.

Suresh had reportedly left behind a note stating that he will either live or die with the girl.

Andhra Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairman Kesali Apparao and Mahila Commission member Geddam Uma visited the girl’s village and inquired about the incident.

They underscored the need for police to keep a tab on persons arrested in POCSO and drug trafficking cases, and later released on bail.

YSR Congress Party Mahila Wing president and MLC Varudu Kalyani has criticised the State government for failing to nab the accused.

Over 19,000 devotees have ‘darshan’ on 12th day of Amarnath Yatra

Published

By

Jammu, July 11 (IANS) Despite rain in the holy cave shrine area, over 19,000 devotees had ‘darshan’ on the 12th day of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra while another batch of 4,885 pilgrims left for Kashmir from here on Thursday.

Braving rain and chanting slogans of ‘Bum Bum Bhole’, 19,631 Yatris had ‘darshan’ on Wednesday inside the holy cave shrine situated 3,888 metres above the sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas.

Wednesday’s group of devotees had pilgrims in both camps — the South Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp and the North Kashmir Baltal base camp.

Locals are lending a vital helping hand to the Yatris by providing ponies, porters, guides and even some carrying the elderly Yatris on their backs over the treacherous mountain track that becomes highly slippery during rain.

Authorities have deployed security personnel on both the 48 km-long Pahalgam and the 14 km-long Baltal-Cave shrine axis.

Around 150 ‘langars’ (community kitchens) run by over 7,000 volunteers work round the clock to serve fresh, healthy food to the Yatris.

Community kitchens have also been set up at the transit camps of Manigam in North Kashmir Ganderbal district and Mir Bazaar in South Kashmir Anantnag district.

Officials of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) headed by J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha manage the affairs of the annual Yatra.

In the 12 days since it started, over 2.50 lakh devotees have performed the Yatra.

Out of the 4,885 pilgrims that left for Kashmir on Thursday, a total of 1,894 pilgrims in 86 vehicles left at 3.05 a.m. while the second escorted convoy carrying 2,991 Yatris in 105 vehicles left at 3.52 a.m.

The first convoy is going to the Baltal base camp while the second convoy is going to the Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp.

Pilgrims use the nearly 300 km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway to reach the Valley.

Given the unobstructed passage provided by massive security arrangements, both pilgrim convoys reach the Valley by early afternoon each day.

No pilgrim movement is allowed from the transit camps towards the two base camps after 5 p.m. each day for the safety of the Yatris.

Since it started on June 29, Amarnath Yatra 2024 has been proceeding safely and peacefully.

The 52-day long Yatra will end on August 29 coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan festivals.

IIT Madras data analytics indicates no mass malpractice in NEET exam: Centre to SC

Published

on

By

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) In its latest affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, the Union government said that the data analysis conducted by IIT Madras shows that there is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localised set of candidates being benefitted, leading to abnormal scores in the National Eligibility Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) examination held on May 5 this year.

“There is an overall increase in the marks obtained by students, specifically in the range of 550 to 720. This increase is seen across cities and centres. This is attributed to 25 per cent reduction in syllabus,” said the Union government, adding that candidates obtaining such high marks are spread across multiple cities and multiple centres, indicating a very “less likelihood of malpractice”.

After a comprehensive data analysis using parameters like marks distribution, city-wise and centre-wise rank distribution, and candidates spread over the marks range, experts of the IIT Madras opined “no abnormality,” the affidavit said.

The Union Education Ministry said that it is duty bound to address the concerns of the students who have appeared in the NEET exam and is making all-round efforts to devise a solution-oriented mechanism while ensuring that, on the one hand, no candidate guilty of malpractice gets any benefit and, on the other hand, 23 lakh students are not required to be burdened with a fresh test merely based upon unsupported apprehensions.

It said that the Union government has established a high-level committee of experts to recommend effective measures for the conduct of transparent, smooth, and fair examinations by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The seven-member committee is headed by K. Radhakrishnan, former ISRO Chairman, and Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Kanpur.

The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Thursday a batch of pleas alleging irregularities in conduct of the NEET-UG examination 2024.

To decide if a re-test should be ordered in its entirety, a bench presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, in an earlier hearing held on Monday, directed NTA to make full disclosure before the apex court regarding the nature of the paper leak, the places where the leak took place, and the lag of time between the occurrence of the leak and the conduct of the examination.

It also asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to file a status report indicating the status of the investigation and the material collected during the course of the investigation.
