BJP to go solo in all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab

Published

on

Chandigarh, March 26 (IANS) After “talks” with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) remained inconclusive, the BJP on Tuesday announced its decision to go alone in all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab slated on June 1.

Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar said the BJP had decided to contest elections in the state alone.

“We took this call after wide consultations with the people, party leaders and workers. The decision is aimed at a bright future of Punjab’s youth, farmers, traders, and backward classes. The works done for Punjab under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership are evident.

“In the last 10 years, every grain of produce by Punjab farmers has been procured and fair MSP (minimum support price) sent to the bank accounts of farmers within a week,” said Jakhar, adding “the decision has been taken in the interest of a safe and secure border state of Punjab and I am sure people will support the BJP in the June 1 election.”

Snapping over two-decade-long ties, the SAD pulled out of the National Democratic Alliance in September 2020 after sharp differences emerged over the now-repealed three controversial farm laws.

The SAD was one of the oldest allies of the BJP. It was among the first to support the 13-day Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, the shortest Prime Minister’s stint in India’s history, in 1996.

To rebuild the beleaguered party and prevent further exodus of leaders, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal, who was known as the ‘Super Chief Minister’ when the party was at the helm, is on his toes.

His wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who held the portfolio of Food Processing Industry in both the Modi-led Central governments, is raking up state-specific issues in the Parliament.

The husband-wife duo won the parliamentary polls in 2019.

Last week, the Shiromani Akali Dal in the meeting of its core committee, the top decision-making body of the Akalis, passed a resolution hinting that the party might go alone in the Lok Sabha polls.

The resolution said “the party’s principles are over politics and it sought to resolve the issues concerning Punjab and the Sikhs as a pre-requisite for an alliance with the BJP, hinting that “no alliance was possible at this stage”.

No role in scams, why should I resign: K’taka CM on BJP’s demand

Published

By

Bengaluru, July 3 (IANS) Reacting to the BJP’s resignation demand over his alleged involvement in the irregularities in the tribal welfare Board and Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah maintained on Wednesday that he would not quit as he had no role in it.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Wednesday, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “Did the BJP government hand over even one case to the CBI when we demanded it? Why are they seeking CBI investigation in every case? Why should we hand over the investigation to the CBI?”

CM Siddaramaiah added, “The earlier BJP government framed the rules that those who lost land should be compensated with 50 per cent of sites. The BJP is now claiming that the rule has been misused. To find out whether the provision has been misused or not, we are conducting an enquiry.”

“Second, all sites that were allotted by the MUDA have been kept under suspension, so where is the loss to the government?” CM Siddaramaiah asked.

“The officers who distributed these sites got transferred over time and an enquiry is being conducted through senior IAS officers. After getting the report we will initiate action,” CM Siddaramaiah said.

“Why should I resign and what is my role in those scams? Will Leader of Opposition, R Ashoka resign as soon as charges are levelled against him? He had secured bail following charges in the Akrama-Sakrama Scheme and he had also appealed for quashing the matter against him. Will he resign from his post in this backdrop?” CM Siddaramaiah stated.

The CM added that the tribal welfare Board case had been handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the Karnataka government had taken the resignation of Minister B Nagendra even though his name was not mentioned in the suicide note of an officer of the Board alleging political pressure.

“The CBI and ED are looking into matters connected with banking in the tribal welfare Board scam. What further action needs to be taken? The BJP is protesting without any issue.

“Without any SIT report against Minister for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil and tribal welfare Board Chairman, Basavaraja Daddal, how can action be initiated against them,” he questioned.

Karnataka BJP leaders, including state President BY Vijayendra and R Ashoka, were detained by Karnataka Police on Wednesday morning while preparing to march to the CM’s residence.

Stop politicising Manipur, people will reject you: PM Modi warns Opposition

Published

on

By

New Delhi, July 3 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, slammed the Opposition for politicising the Manipur issue, saying that the state “will soon reject them.”

PM Modi urged everyone to look beyond politics and work together to ensure stability in the region. He warned those trying to exacerbate the situation, saying, “Those adding fuel to the fire, I warn them Manipur will reject them soon.”

PM Modi also highlighted the reduction in violent incidents in the region over the past few months.

“We are continuously trying to maintain peace and stability in Manipur. More than 11,000 FIRs have been registered, and more than 500 people have been arrested in Manipur, which is a very small state. Now, the incidents of violence are coming down. This means peace is possible,” he said.

He pointed out that schools, colleges, and offices in Manipur are operating like in any other state in the country, and all examinations were held as scheduled.

“Both Central and state governments are actively working to resolve regional issues with patience and peace. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur and stayed for weeks there, engaging with relevant stakeholders,” said the Prime Minister, adding that besides political leaders, various government officials also visited the state to assess and address the situation.

Reflecting on the history of the state, he said that Manipur has had a history of disharmony and hostility among certain sections and also cited a 1993 incident.

He pointed out that the Congress party should remember that President’s Rule was imposed in the state ten times during their tenure and also recalled the spate of violence in 1993 that lasted for about five years.

PM Modi added that those who are questioning the situation in the northeastern states must know that the BJP has worked to make this region a powerful engine of growth.

He said that numerous efforts have been made to maintain peace in the North-East, yielding “hopeful” results. He noted that inter-border rifts between states have historically sparked conflicts since Independence, but the current government has been working to end these rifts by working for agreements between states, achieving significant success.
