Akshay Oberoi reveals he faced 'cultural challenges, serious racism' in America
Mumbai, May 28 (IANS) Actor Akshay Oberoi has opened up about his upbringing in the US and the cultural challenges he faced there.
Akshay, who is all geared up for the release of his upcoming courtroom drama ‘Illegal 3’, was born in New Jersey, US. He pursued Theater Arts and Economics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
During a candid conversation, Akshay shared the difficulties he encountered while growing up in the US.
The actor said: “I grew up in America facing cultural challenges. My home was very desi, so our lifestyle, food, and everything were pretty similar to how it is here. When I was 10-12 years old, I wanted to be an actor.”
“There was no chance for me to succeed there, as we used to face serious racism in the industry. It is the same now as well, but I had mentally prepared myself that I had to come here and pursue my dreams, as I have always been a big fan of Bollywood,” added Akshay, who was last seen in the movie ‘Fighter’.
After moving to India, Akshay performed in plays at the Prithvi Theatre and received training from Kishore Namit Kapoor.
Meanwhile, ‘Illegal’ season 3 also stars Neha Sharma, Piyush Mishra, Ira Dubey, and Satyadeep Misra. It will be streaming from May 29 on JioCinema Premium.

Rajesh Tailang recalls ‘Mirzapur’ scene that took 3 nights and more than 100 cuts to shoot
Mumbai, July 8 (IANS) Actor Rajesh Tailang, who appears in the recently released third season of the popular streaming show ‘Mirzapur’, shared an interesting anecdote from the show’s first season.
The actor recalled that the scene where Munna Tripathi’s character storms into the Pandit family’s house to kill them was filmed over three nights, and it took more than 100 cuts to shoot that scene. The scene was shot in Varanasi.
Reflecting on the experience, Rajesh said: “We shot the first scene at a house, where Munna arrives and there’s a shootout. It took three nights to film, with about 103-107 cuts. It was a thrilling experience, even though it was a short scene.”
The actor also revealed how he was approached by the casting director, Anmol Abhishek, who is also an actor and manages casting for various projects.
“Abhishek called me for an audition. I live in Delhi most of the time, so I asked my cousin to help me record it. My cousin brought along a friend who works as a graphic designer at an ad agency. I had him play the role of the man with the knife in my audition tape,” he added.
This audition, submitted around 2017-2018, marked the beginning of Rajesh’s journey with ‘Mirzapur’.
The actor added, “When you audition, you get a brief about the character and the world they’re in, but the full picture only emerges later. Initially, I had no idea that ‘Mirzapur’ would turn into such a big hit and a part of pop culture.”
Tailang was pleasantly surprised by the engaging script and the swag each character carried.
“Reading and delivering the dialogue was fun. There was something special about the series that made it enjoyable to perform,” he added.

Anurag Kashyap got palpitations before shooting for throat-slitting scene in ‘Bad Cop’
Mumbai, July 8 (IANS) Director-actor Anurag Kashyap, who is receiving a lot of positive responses for his work in the recently released streaming series ‘Bad Cop’, had a tough time shooting a gory scene in the show.
Scenes involving violence are often challenging and require a lot of courage to shoot, both for the actors and the crew. One might assume that Anurag Kashyap, who is known for his graphic violence scenes in films, would handle it easily. However, the truth is far from this.
The show’s director, Aditya Datt, said: “During one of the intense scenes, when I was telling Kashyap to cut the throat, he just could not. I was trying to tell him that he has shot this so many times, like there’s been major gore in his films than any other movies, but he kept saying, shooting is a different thing, but doing it is a different thing.”
Aditya further elaborated, “He used to get palpitations before doing it, and I should sit him down and tell him that’s a, and I went with the presumption he’ll do it so easy because he’s done it so much in the, be it Raman Raghav or the Gangs of Wasseypur or any of the movies that he’s made, which is hardcore into the gangland, killing each other, shooting, cutting everything. But when you actually put a knife in Anurag’s hand and say, act it out and cut this guy’s throat or cut a thing, he kind of does get vulnerable on set.”
‘Bad Cop’ is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
