Kabul, July 11 (IANS) Afghan police have dismantled a gang of kidnappers in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported Thursday.

The kidnappers were attempting to abduct a resident of Lashkar Gah city, the capital of the province, when police stormed a location and rescued the kidnapped person, the source said.

In addition, over the past 24 hours police apprehended 23 people allegedly involved in criminal activities in the provinces of Helmand, Kunar, Samangan, Balkh, and Panjshir, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement.

Most of the detainees were involved in murder and theft cases, said the statement, reported Xinhua news agency.

Afghan caretaker government has vowed to crack down on criminal elements to ensure law and order in the war-ravaged Asian country.

Warsaw, July 11 (IANS) A quake hitting a coal mine in southern Poland left at least 11 miners injured and dozens still underground waiting to be rescued, local authorities said on Thursday.

So far, around 30 people have managed to get to the surface. Twenty of them were taken to hospital in stable condition, according to Lukasz Pach, Director of the Provincial Emergency Medical Service in Katowice.

There are more than 10 rescue teams on site and the rescue is still going on, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Polish Mining Group, which owns the mine, said that there were 68 people in the affected area at the time of the quake.

The coal mine is one of the oldest in Silesia, southern Poland.

Phnom Penh, July 11 (IANS) Cambodian government aims to increase the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) or electric cars to 30,000 by 2030, according to its National Policy on the Development of EVs 2024-2030 released on Thursday.

The Southeast Asian country has also planned to increase the number of electric scooters to 720,000, and three-wheeler electric vehicles to 20,000 by 2030, reports Xinhua news agency.

“The vision of the national policy is to transform Cambodia into a country with optimal electric vehicles in order to support and achieve sustainable development and ensure people’s well-being,” the government said in the release.

It added that EVs have gained popularity in Cambodia, thanks to their less expenditure on fuel and environmental friendliness.

“Using EVs costs only 9,633 riels (2.35 US dollars) for a distance of 100 kilometers, while using petrol or diesel cars costs up to 35,723 riels (8.71 dollars),” it said.

Currently, Cambodia has officially registered a total of 1,614 electric cars, 914 electric scooters and 440 three-wheeler electric vehicles. The kingdom has 21 EV charging stations.

The three most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China’s BYD, Japan’s Toyota, and America’s Tesla, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

Cambodian government has reduced import duties on EVs since 2021 to about 50 percent lower than taxes on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Udom Pisey, an EV manager at the Car4you Co., Ltd., which imports Letin Mengo EVs from China, said EVs have far fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel vehicles, so maintenance and repair costs are also cheaper.

“Using EVs not only saves money on fuel, but also reduce air pollution,” she said.

Bucharest, July 11 (IANS) Over three-quarters of Romania’s counties will be under a Red Code alert for extreme heat and severe thermal discomfort this weekend, with temperatures expected to soar to 41 degrees Celsius, according to the Romanian National Meteorological Administration (ANM).

The Red Code alert will be in effect on Saturday and Sunday for the regions of Crisana, Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, Moldova, and the capital Bucharest, where maximum temperatures will range from 37 to 41 degrees Celsius, and the temperature-humidity index (THI) will surpass the critical threshold of 80 units, indicating intense thermal discomfort, said the ANM.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will be under an Orange Code alert for heat, experiencing maximum temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, with coastal areas reaching 32 to 35 degrees Celsius, reports Xinhua news agency.

Additionally, more than half the country will be under an Orange Code heat wave warning on Thursday, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius, said the ANM.

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) President Droupadi Murmu accepted credentials from the envoys of South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Spain, and Argentina at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the envoys who presented their credentials to President Murmu were Ambassador Lumumba Maklele Nyajok (South Sudan); Ambassador Stella Nkomo (Zimbabwe); Ambassador Juan Antonio March Pujol (Spain); and, Ambassador Mariano Agustin Caucino (Argentina).

Previously, Argentina was represented in India by Daniel Chuburu while Jose Maria Ridao Dominguez is Spain’s outgoing Ambassador. Zimbabwe’s Ambassador Godfrey Majoni Chipare has also ended his India tenure.

The ceremony marks the formal beginning of the Ambassadors’ duties in India, signifying the strengthening of diplomatic relations between India and the respective nations.
