Gujarat Open Golf C'ship: Abhinav Lohan fires ace on his way to title triumph

Published

on

Ahmedabad, March 9 (IANS) Abhinav Lohan of the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurugram, made it a memorable final day as he struck an ace en route to a determined three-under 69 to secure victory at a total of seven-under 209 in the Gujarat Open Golf Championship 2024 at the Glade One Golf Resort & Club here on Saturday. Karnal’s Mani Ram returned a last round of 73 to finish runner-up at a total of six-under 210 in the INR 1 crore event.

The first two rounds of the tournament comprised nine holes each. The third and fourth rounds comprised 18 holes each. The tournament was played over a total of 54 holes. The par for the course in the third and fourth rounds was 72. The 9-hole course was played twice in rounds three and four with different pin positions.

Abhinav Lohan (34-36-70-69), lying overnight tied fifth and five shots off the lead, had a dream outing at Glade One on Saturday as he came up with an ace on the 16th that turned the tide in his favour and helped him seize his third career title and first in four years. The 34-year-old Lohan started the day with a bogey but came back with some good wedge shots on the fifth and eighth that produced birdies. On the 13th he narrowly missed a hole-in-one and had to settle for a birdie.

Abhinav then suffered a setback on the 14th where he made a three-putt and dropped a bogey. This was followed by the game-changer hole-in-one on the 16th that helped Lohan leapfrog all his rivals except the leader Mani Ram, who later stumbled with a quadruple-bogey on the 17th that saw Abhinav emerge champion. Mani Ram (33-33-71-73) was staring at his maiden PGTI title with a two-shot lead till the 16th thanks to his four birdies and two bogeys. But a few poor bunker shots on the 17th where he had a tough lie saw Mani Ram concede a quadruple bogey. However, his birdie with a long conversion on the 18th helped the 41-year-old Mani Ram claim the sole runner-up spot.

Abhinav, a part of the Indian team that won a silver medal at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, said, “That hole-in-one changed everything for me. I still can’t believe what a day I’ve had. Sitting in the scoring area I was more worried about calculating my score correctly before signing my scorecard because I’ve signed a wrong scorecard in the past. I guess it was just meant to be. I didn’t hit the best of shots on the 16th, but it landed perfectly on the slope and found the hole.

“I would like to thank my family, my coach, my sponsor and my home course DLF Golf & Country Club for all their support since this win has been a long time coming,” added Abhinav, who picked up the winner’s cheque worth INR 15 lakh to jump from 26th to third position in the PGTI Ranking. Lohan had also claimed the silver medal for Haryana in the individual event of the 2022 National Games.

Italy’s Michele Ortolani and Chandigarh’s Angad Cheema took tied third place at five-under 211. Ahmedabad’s Anshul Patel was the best-placed among the local golfers as he ended the week in tied 24th at two-over 218. Scotland’s Harvey McDonald, the only amateur to make the cut, won the trophy for the best-performing amateur.

Round 4 Leaderboard:

209: Abhinav Lohan (34-36-70-69)

210: Mani Ram (33-33-71-73)

211: Michele Ortolani (39-32-71-69); Angad Cheema (33-38-69-71).

Copa America: Coach Bielsa rues Uruguay's missed chances

Published

on

By

Charlotte, July 11 (IANS) Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa bemoaned his team’s wastefulness after the Celeste were eliminated from the Copa America following a 1-0 semifinal defeat to Colombia.

Jefferson Lerma put Colombia ahead in the 39th minute but the Cafeteros were reduced to 10 men when Daniel Munoz was shown a red card on the stroke of halftime, reports Xinhua.

“We should have obtained an advantage but, with one more man, the game was distorted,” Bielsa said. “There were many interruptions, which made it difficult to maintain a fluid rhythm of play.”

Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez squandered two early scoring chances and it appeared only a matter of time before Bielsa’s men would find a way past Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

Despite dominating possession, the Celeste managed only two shots on target from 11 attempts in total.

“We should have been able to swing the balance in our favor, both in the first half – due to our movement in attack – and in the second due to our numerical advantage,” Bielsa said. “In the last few minutes, Colombia could have extended the lead because their scoring chances were very clear.”

The 50-year-old rejoined the men’s national football team in 2023 for a second spell, having led USA to the last-16 of the 2022 World Cup, but defeats to Panama and Uruguay on home soil have brought an end to 14-match tenure.

“Gregg Berhalter has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, effective immediately,” US Soccer Federation said in a statement.

U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker will lead and has launched a search for Berhalter’s replacement.

“We are deeply grateful to Gregg for his commitment the past five years to the Men’s National Team and to U.S. Soccer. 'World of soccer stood still…': Gautam Adani in awe of teenage Lamine Yamal's magical goal in Euro 2024

Published

By

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) Gautam Adani, the Chairman of Adani Group, was in awe of Spain’s teenage football sensation Lamine Yamal as the 16-year-old winger etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest scorer in Euro’s history.

During the Euro 2024 semifinal against France when Spain were trailing 0-1, Yamal drew level with a glorious curling finish to become the youngest goalscorer in the history of the continental tournament.

Yamal picked up a loose ball more than 25 metres from the goal to score an equaliser for his side from a difficult position. With a drop of the shoulder, he steals space from Adrien Rabiot before unleashing his wondrous strike, sending the ball arcing into the top-right corner of Mike Maignan’s goal. The xG (a statistical measurement of the quality of goalscoring chances) of the shot was just 0.023.

“The world of soccer stood still at 20:16 yesterday. Logic defying magic goal from 20 yards by the 16 year old Lamine Yamal. Coincidence? Maybe. Talent? Undeniable!” Gautam Adani posted on X.

“What an inspiring story for all youngsters – humble and difficult beginnings, talks to his mother daily, carries school textbooks with him and yet this teenage sensation has made history, becoming the youngest ever to play – and score – for both FC Barcelona and Spain.

“Congratulations to @FCBarcelona for scouting out Yamal at six years of age! Amazing. The power of youth is blazing bright! Congrats to Spain and Yamal! Bring it on, #EURO2024,” the post further read.

Gambhir has great cricket brain, he's going to be fantastic for India: Dale Steyn

Published

on

By

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn lauded Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach and said his aggression and game awareness on the field will be beneficial for the Men in Blue.

BCCI announced Gambhir as head coach of the Indian team after the departure of Rahul Dravid. India clinched the T20 World Cup title to end the 11-year-long ICC trophy drought in his last assignment.

“I’m a big fan of Gautam Gambhir. I love his aggression. He’s one of the few Indians I ever played against who came back at you, and I like that. I think he’s going to take that into the dressing room with guys like Virat and some of the other senior players who might not play as big a part anymore. I’m not too sure,” Steyn told Star Sports.

“Not just in India, but in world cricket, we need guys who are a little bit more aggressive and play the game a little bit harder. We all seem to play in the leagues against each other, and we become quite friendly and friends. I like the way that he’s fierce on the field but a gentleman off the field. He’s also streetwise, a very smart cricketer, and has a great cricket brain. So I think from that point of view, he’s going to be fantastic for them too,” he added.

Former Proteas all-rounder Jacques Kallis also remains confident in Gambhir’s ability to excel in the job with his aggressive nature.

“It’s great to see Gautam getting into the coaching side of things. He’s got a really good cricket brain. He’ll bring some fire and loves playing the game aggressively. I think he’ll bring that added touch, and the guys will certainly learn a lot from him. He’s got a lot to add and will bring significant value to that Indian side. I wish him all the best—not too much against us, but I’m sure he’ll do a fantastic job,” Kallis said.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi added, “I think it’s a big opportunity, and we need to see how he makes the most of it. I have seen his interviews, and he talks positively and is very straightforward.”

Gambhir will join the Indian side for the Sri Lanka tour, where India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against Sri Lanka, starting on July 27.
